The very first social institution humans come across are
schools and teachers play an integral role in it. Throughout our lives we have
been learning by our teachers and spread the knowledge to others, therefore, it
is essential to know that what we are learning to preach correct knowledge and
perpetuate a prosperous society. It is seen that teaching is a challenging job
that requires the integrity of a person and a skill set for the emotional and
educational development of a human being. While it is challenging, it is also
one of the most rewarding jobs. But rewards are the result of hardcore effort,
commitment, and dedication. The following are some essential skills that will
complement the above-mentioned qualities.
Communication:
Teaching is said to be a form of communication as knowledge
is spread through word of mouth. A teacher must have excellence in
communication and clarity in a speech that includes both verbal and written
communication. Also, a teacher must be able to alter communication style with
the level of the audience to explain the material which is both accessible and
meaningful to the students.
Critical thinking:
Teachers are bombarded with a variety of problems in their
day to day tasks with several students with different backgrounds and mindsets.
It becomes hard to meet deadlines when you already have enough to manage. A
skillful teacher always knows what resources are needed to address the problems
effectively. This demands for critical thinking skill of a teacher to get
things done on time.
Patience:
Sometimes it becomes hard to control your temper when you
already have a long day to go. Attending seminars, teaching children, meeting
with colleagues, and reporting parents on the progress of their children
becomes tiresome and headache when you lose control of your anger. Patience and
anger management are two essential skills for all teachers to learn.
Positive attitude:
Teaching as a career demands a person to stay positive and
optimistic even if you know that some war has broken down in your country or
there is a shortage of food outside. To enlighten the naive minds and give them
positive energy a teacher must possess a positive attitude itself. This
attitude helps a teacher to deal with critical situations and inculcate
confidence among students.
Adaptability:
Above mentioned skills become useless when a person is
unable to adapt according to the needs of students and society as a whole. The
modern world has welcomed the digital age likewise its time to update and
change the long old methods of teaching and learning. Teaching is challenging
this way as you have to deal with whatever is thrown in your way.
